The Ivory Bloc

A seated theatre show with a string section and a lighting plot written like a score. No pit, so the whole set was shot from the aisle and the balcony rail.

Seated shows are the hardest room in live work: you cannot move, you cannot make a sound, and the audience is close enough to hear your shutter. I shot this one from the third-row aisle for the first half and the balcony rail for the second, both on a long lens, both on silent shutter.

The plot was built in slow washes rather than hits, which meant the frames could breathe. Forty-seven went to the band and the promoter at twenty past three.
